Cryotherapy..... More than a recovery tool

You do not have to be an elite athlete to experience the recovery benefits of a whole-body cryotherapy session at Move Physical Therapy and Performance Center.

What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy might sound like some kind of treatment from the future, but it’s actually a fairly simple therapy that has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. Cryotherapy is the practice of exposing patients to extremely cold temperatures for short periods of time. Regular cryotherapy sessions may improve the symptoms of many conditions and support overall wellness.

Recovery benefits of Cryotherapy:

Pain relief:
Cryotherapy can be used to treat chronic muscle and nerve pain.

Reduces and manages Migraine Symptoms:
Cryotherapy has been shown to help reduce migraine pain. This is done by using localized treatment on the back of the neck. By numbing the nerves there, migraine pain can be significantly reduced. Jackie Dunn the Co-Founder of Move has used cryotherapy to help manage her chronic migraines “After my first whole-body cryotherapy session I was able to feel relief from my chronic migraines.”

Reduces arthritic pain:
Studies have found that whole-body cryotherapy significantly reduced pain in people with arthritis. They found that the treatment was well-tolerated. It also allowed for more aggressive physiotherapy and occupational therapy as a result. This ultimately made rehabilitation programs more effective.

Numbs Nerve Irritation:
Many athletes have been using cryotherapy to treat injuries for years, and one of the reasons why is that it can numb pain. The cold can actually numb an irritated nerve. Cryotherapy will treat the affected area with a small probe inserted into the nearby tissue. This can help treat pinched nerves or neuromas, chronic pain, or even acute injuries.

Boosts Metabolism:
Whole Body Cryotherapy has been shown to increase the basal metabolic rate. A single session of Whole Body Cryotherapy has been shown to cause the body to burn an additional calories. Cryotherapy will not help you lose weight by itself but it when combined with a diet plan and exercise whole-body cryotherapy is a great tool to help you reach your goals.

Reduces Anxiety and Depression:
The ultra-cold temperatures in whole-body cryotherapy can cause physiological hormonal responses. This includes the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and endorphins. This can have a positive effect on those experiencing mood disorders like anxiety and depression. One study suggests that whole-body cryotherapy is actually effective in short-term treatment for both.
